Lot 65 - STEVE MC CURRY SRI LANKA PRINT SIGNED 1995
Steve Mc Curry, American, 1950 to present was born in Philadelphia. Titled: Fishermen at Weligama Sri Lanka. This is a signed photographic print depiction of the cultural openness in Sri Lanka, as individual fishermen crowned with indigenous turbans each mounted on stilts capture the essence of the working human to survive which Steve Mc Curry images have become modern icons. Deep henna hues of the native skin tones capture this sublime image while green waters and white sea foam contrast the rocky shoreline, palms and grey overcast sky transcending it into a timeless classic of our era. National Geographic featured this image on the cover of “The World in Photographs” author Ferdinand Protzman and a comparable image titled “South Coast, Sri Lanka, 1995” is included in the Phaidon Press edition of “South Southeast” by Mc Curry where a copy is signed and inscribed by photographer and dated 2006. Both are included along with the print in this lot. Mc Curry, a freelance photographer for National Geographic has won numerous awards including the Eisenstaedt and is a member of the Magnum Photos. Measurements: image with margin 28” x 39 ½” + 4 ¼” glass and frame (71.7 cm x 100.7 cm + 11.3 cm).
