Roy Shifrin's sculpture of ''Icarus,'' on permanent display in the entrance plaza of Manhattan Community College, 199 Chambers Street, next to the Hudson River, is one of the most ambitious outdoor sculptures in New York City. Thematically, the 12-by-13 foot chunk of polished bronze, set on an 18-foot pedestal, takes off from the Greek myth in which Icarus, flying with fragile, wax-bound wings, perishes because he ignored his father's advice not to fly too close to the sun. Mr. Shifrin's complex but monolithic form, which suggests among other things a man's torso, suggests Icarus's dual relation to the heavenly light. -Michael Brenson (The New York Times)
