Edouard Léon Cortès (FRENCH, 1882-1969) oil painting on canvas depicting a busy evening street scene of the Pont nuef. The lighted buildings and lamps warm the heart of the viewer against the dreary gray early evening sky. The streets appear to be slick from a light rain that has just let up. Also in the scene is the bronze statue of Henry IV by Lemot after Pietro Tacca. Édouard Leon Cortès was a French post-impressionist artist of French and Spanish ancestry. He is known as "Le Poete Parisien de la Peinture" or "the Parisian Poet of Painting" because of his beautiful and diverse Paris cityscapes in a variety of weather and night settings. 95 - RUSSIAN PAPIER MACHE PORTRAIT PLAQUE ALEXANDRA
Stunning hand painted Papier Mache round portrait plaque of Empress Alexandra of Russia. Exquisitely painted and mounted in frame with relief grapecluster and vine design. Abslolutely a stunning show of skill. Plaque measures 11 3/4" diameter + 4" mat & frame(29.8cm + 10.1cm). Nicholas II abdicated following the February Revolution of 1917 during which he and his family were imprisoned first in the Alexander Palace at Tsarskoye Selo, then later in the Governor's Mansion in Tobolsk, and finally at the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg. Nicholas II, his wife, his son, his four daughters, the family's medical doctor, the Tsar's valet, the Empress' lady-in-waiting, and the family's cook were killed in the same room by the Bolsheviks on the night of 16/17 July 1918. This led to the canonization of Nicholas II, his wife the Empress Alexandra and their children as martyrs by various groups tied to the Russian Orthodox Church within Russia and, prominently, outside Russia.
