136 - MAURICE QUENTIN DE LA TOUR PAIR PASTEL PORTRAITS - Maurice Quentin de La Tour (FRENCH, 1704-1788). Pair of beautiful pastel portraits. One depicts a young woman the other depicts an older woman. Measures 12 1/4" height x 9 1/2" width (31.12cm x 24.13cm). (b Saint-Quentin, 5 Sept 1704; d Saint-Quentin, 17 Feb 1788). French pastellist. He was one of the greatest pastellists of the 18th century, an equal of Jean-Sim?on Chardin and Jean-Baptiste Perronneau. Unlike them, however, he painted no works in oils. Reacting against the stately portraits of preceding generations and against the mythological portraits of many of his contemporaries, La Tour returned to a more realistic and sober style of work. The fundamental quality of his art lies in his ability to suggest the temperament and psychology of his subjects by means of their facial expression, and thereby to translate their fugitive emotions on to paper: 'I penetrate into the depths of my subjects without their knowing it, and capture them whole', as he himself put it. 139 - MAMMOTH TUSK IVORY WITH CHINESE DRAGON DESIGN - A beautifully crafted carved mammoth tusk depicts 9 highly detailed dragon figures flying and interacting. Scene also depicts clouds and the sun. Reverse side of tusk has an etched polychrome dragon and cloud design. Signed on reverse of tusk and on base of tusk (see photos).Tusk itself Measures 65 1/3'' (166cm) length. It stands 36'' (91.5cm) height + 10'' (25.4cm) base height x 27'' (68.7cm) width. 9 3/4'' (25cm) circumference at its widest point. This hand carved Mammoth Ivory Tusk is Hand crafted by a Master Carver to perfection. This Mammoth ivory tusk Carving is made of 100% genuine Mammoth Ivory Tusk. The extinct woolly Mammoth roamed the earth 10,000-40,000 years ago. Today we can find Mammoth ivory tusks in the arctic regions like Siberia in Russia.

139a - RARE IMPERIAL WHITE JADE TRANSLUCENT COVERED VASE - Very rare Imperial White Jade covered vase with extreme translucence and delicate carving. This vase is polished to perfection and displays the great virtuosity achieved by only the best carver from the Qing Dynasty. 18th century. Most certainly made for Imperial use. Has symmetrical vertical lines like soldiers in line marching to the battle leading up to the open work of the handles. Finished with a small mythological head just under the lid. The vase is so delicate and translucent as seldom seen. Similar quality to that found in museums. Measures 10 1/2" height x 6" width (26.67cm x 15.24cm). Has a weight of 2948 grams. A similar vase was sold in Christie's Hong Kong in 2006 for 1.4 million United Stated Dollars (estimated auction price was $600,000-800,000). Another was sold in Massachusetts for $501,000 USD (estimated price was $4,000-6,000). This vase was purchase in London in the 1960's and belongs to a private collector.

140 - PAIR OF LARGE CHINESE IVORY FOO DOG CARVINGS - Impressive pair of Chinese ivory foo dog figures. One depicts a male foo dog with a ball in his right paw and 3 pups at his feet. The other depicts a female foo dog holding a pup in her left paw and has 3 pups at her feet. Each base has an intricately etched dragon design with red and turquoise enamel beads. No apparent signature. Late 19th or early 20th century. Each measures 16 1/2'' height (42cm).
